Surname Saturday - My Creeden Tree

When I started my blog, I didn't know anything about Timothy Creeden's origins other than he came from Ireland and family legend said he was from County Cork. Timothy is my 2x great-grandfather and for a long time I thought he was my first ancestor from Ireland to come to the United States. Since them I've learned that his father Patrick Creedan came to Clinton County, OH in 1849 and then sent for his children Timothy and Julia after he received word that his wife (Mary Coakley) had died in Ireland. The following report shows three generations of my Creeden tree.

Tuesday's Tip - The Ohio History Connection Site

If you have ancestors from Ohio, be sure and check out the the Ohio History Connection. This is the online home of the archives at the Ohio History Center in Columbus, Ohio. A few items I've found useful are:

Searchable databases - They have searchable databases online including their online collections catalog, Ohio public records index, Ohio newspaper portal, and all volumes of the Ohio History Journal.

Ohio Public Records Index - Provides an index to Ohio death certificates searchable by name, county, and years. Names are spelled as they were entered into the index, so you may have to try variations. Only certain years are covered as stated on the main index page.

Online Collections Catalog - Searches their newspaper and state archives collections by keyword.

Newspaper index - This index lists their newspaper resources by county or city. Other documents available for the selected area are also provided in the search results.

Research guides - A set of research guides for help on researching specific record types.

Photocopy requests - Instructions on how to request photocopies of records in the archives.

I had great success with the photocopy service. I requested scans of microfilm images for a few issues of the Celina Democrat newspaper and received digital copies of the pages within a couple of days after making payment. Their email response was quick and very helpful and the quality of the scans was excellent. The pages contained an obituary for my 2x great-grandfather Timothy Creeden that I'd been trying to track down for years.

This is just a sampling of what's available on their site. Thanks to the Ohio History Connection for providing such a valuable resource!

Church Record Sunday - Baptism of Anna Rohrer in Philadelphia, PA

The following image is from a Roman Catholic baptism register for my 2x great-grandmother, Anna Rohrer Niehaus.

It's hard to read, but shows that  Anna Barbara Theresia Rohrer was born on 13 Jul 1849 and baptized on 22 Jul 1849. Her parents were Albert Rohrer and Walburga (Fisher) Rohrer. She was baptized in the St. Peter the Apostle parish in Philadelphia, PA and the family was from Württemberg.

The birth year was a bit of a surprise since Anna's funeral card and other records placed her birth year at 1851. An 1850 census record for the family showed a daughter born in 1849 named Hannah Rohrer. I had thought maybe they had a daughter before Anna, but now think this was my Anna.

The Roman Catholic baptism registers are available on FindMyPast.com.

Sunday's Obituary - Robert Creeden, Clinton County, Ohio

Died. -- In Wilmington, on March 2, 1889, Robert, Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Creeden, aged six months, three weeks and two days. Funeral services took place on Sunday, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church. Interment in Sugar Grove cemetery.

This obituary was published in the Wilmington, OH Clinton County Democrat on March 2, 1889. Digital images of the paper are available on FindMyPast.com.

Although the obituary says Robert's father is J.J. Creeden, the Ohio Births and Christening index on Ancestry.com lists his parents as Patrick J. Creedon and Mary Clark. An entry on FindAGrave has Robert's date of birth as 9/1888 and his date of death as 3/1/1889. It says that his plot in Sugar Grove cemetery was a charity plot.

I don't know if there is a relationship between this family and my Clinton County Creedens, but both my grandfather and father were named Robert. My Creeden family also attended St. Columbkille Church, so it's probable that the two families knew each other.

Matrilineal Monday - Councill family of Maryland

When I started researching my Councill family, I could only trace back to my 2x great-grandparents Francis Councill and Mary Ann Meredith from Queen Anne's County, MD. Using a combination of church, land, and probate records, I've been able to go back four more generations to Henry Councill and Elizabeth Banroche. There are still several mysteries and conjectures on here, but this is what I have in my family tree software so far. I have quite a few dates, marriages, and children that aren't entered yet, so I'll update the tree in a future post.

......3 Mary Councill
......3 Ann Councill
...2 Catharine Councill
...2 Martha Councill
...2 Mary Councill
...2 Anastasia Councill

Henry Councill is said to be from England and Elizabeth Banroche from France. Elizabeth's surname is a bit suspect since I've never found anyone else with that name. One of my Councill cousins suggested that it may actually be referencing a place: Ban de la Roche in Alsace, France. I think that may be a good guess!

On page 281 of the book Catholics of Colonial Delmarva by Thomas Joseph Peterman, it says "She (Anastasia Councill) was the daughter of Henry Councill of Tully's Neck... The other children of Henry Councill (who had come to Maryland in 1729) and his wife Elizabeth Banroche (who was of French parentage)..." It goes on to name the children and their wives. The source the book gives for the paragraph is Carley, "Baptismal Register of Joseph Mosley, S.J.." 41.

I've seen several trees on Ancestry that have Dennis Councill as the father of Henry Councill. There are references to a Dennis Councill listed in the debts for the estate of Jacobus Seth in Talbot County, MD in 1698 and 1702. In the 1702 entry, Dennis is called a runaway, so I've wondered if he could've been an indentured servant. I need more information to prove whether or not he was the father of Henry, so I haven't added Dennis to my tree yet. I noticed that the reference in the above paragraph states that Henry came to Maryland in 1729, so that doesn't match up with the dates for Dennis.

Another mystery is the surname of the mother of Francis Councill. Most of my evidence points to her being Ann Baynard, but there are some sources that say Ann Browning. Despite the mysteries, I've learned a lot about my Councills since my first post about them in 2011.

Sunday's Obituary - Ellen Creeden

Mrs. Ellen Creeden, wife of Timothy Creeden, died yesterday morning at her home, a short distance north of this village. She was 65 years of age. A husband and seven children are left to mourn ?. The funeral will be held from Sts Peter and Paul Church, Reading. Wednesday morning.

This obituary was published in the Cincinnati Enquirer on July 7, 1891 under a heading of news for Lockland, Ohio. The scan is from Newspapers.com. Ellen would have been born around 1826 if her age is correct in the obituary. I've wondered if her husband Timothy Creeden was related to my Creedens. I've seen a picture of him on several Ancestry.com trees and the resemblance to my Timothy Creeden is pretty remarkable. Ellen's husband would've been about the right age to be a brother or cousin to my Timothy's father Patrick Creedan. I'd love to hear from anyone researching Ellen and Timothy.

Census Sunday - 1916 Farm Journal of Mercer County, Ohio

A digitized copy of the 1916 Farm Journal of Mercer County, Ohio is available on Internet Archives. The Farm Journal has names, addresses, occupations and some other information on Mercer County residents, so it can be a good source of information between the census years of 1910 and 1920.

The directory for the town of Celina starts on page 17 and includes a picture of Main Street and an explanation of the abbreviations used. The directory entries include information on occupations, number of children, horses and cattle, and whether a person owned or rented their home.

Creeden entries for Celina on Page 21 of Farm Journal

The entries for the Creedens in Celina showed my great-grandparents Charles and Anna Creeden were tenants at 329 E Fulton St. and had two children living with them. Charles' occupation was listed as laborer. His mother Mary owned her home at 428 W. Fulton St. and two of her children were living with her. Her daughter Ida was working as a seamstress and her son Josh was working as a laborer. Charles' brother Dan was also listed with his wife Lenna as home owners on 429 W. Livingston St.

The abbreviation list shows "B tel" stood for Bell telephone, but it doesn't explain what "Ind tel." meant. I would guess that indicates they had a phone of some kind since there are also entries with no "tel" reference.

Pulskamp entries for Celina on Page 34

The Celina entries for the Pulskamps show my great-grandparents George and Mary Pulskamp owned their home at 611 N. Walnut St. and had six children living with them. George was editor of the Der Bote, a German newspaper and an advertisement for the newspaper was also in the Farm Journal. Interesting that the Der Bote ad has a two digit phone number, while the individual entries didn't include a phone number.
